Finding the Elven Ruins
4/29/17 Recap

Dmitri sat on an old log and pulled out some rations while Ajari and Essel debated some issue about logging a forest or some such nonsense. Apparently, the Druid and her boyfriend were offended by something Essel said and had apparently stormed off. Dmitri just chewed on the jerky as he tried not to listen.

He considered the combat with the massive animated tree the day before as the jibber-jabber continued. Things in that encounter worked out well and so Dmitri was feeling emboldened to take on the next challenge. Eventually, the party packed up and Lord Septos issued the orders for the next task: Exploring and charting the immediate area to the southwest. It was good to explore again. This step was the first in settling the region. Who knows, maybe some day an inn or a farm might be built on this very spot. This would please Erastil.

The trees grew denser and so the party was forced to lead their mounts on foot. On the second day, Dmitri smelled a campfire. He and Ajari scouted it out to find signs of a struggle near the source, about a day old. A young boy (Nyron) was attempting to hide nearby but Dmitri spotted him. Ajari attempted to calm the young lad but Dmitri thought his inhuman appearance may have had the opposite effect.

After returning to Lord Septos, the boy explained that he was sold by his Uncle (Welmin) to pay off a gambling debt to a man from Mivon named Kygar. The boy also reported that Kygar had been taken spriggan.jpgby some strange but large gnome-like creatures.

Dmitri lead the party along the obvious tracks. Again, he and Ajari scouted ahead to find the creatures resting with a prisoner, hanging from a tree in a large sack. Lord Septos approached them and Ginny translated. They refused to submit and a fight ensued. For some reason, Lord Septos attempted to flee although his horse would not comply. He abandoned his steed to set out on foot and ran as fast as possible. This was very unsettling for Dmitri. The party still managed to slay the creatures although a third one did appear with a snipe attack, hidden in the trees. Eventually, all three were slain and Kygar was rescued. Lord Septos returned after the fight. Dmitri assumed that some source of witchery must have been involved.

After some discussion, Lord Septos deemed that Kygar was innocent of any crime. He was gifted a generous sum of gold and asked if he would be willing to act as a source of contact in Mivon, should we ever have the need to go there.

The group set off again and found the elven ruins that Narthropple claimed were in the area: a Quickling.pngfast fey creature. It’s gorilla tactics proved effect initially, up until it was cornered, disarmed and slain. Ginny found a small vase full of gold and gems.

A wyvern? What in the Abyss is that? Dmitri’s imagination churned as he listened to Essel share some knowledge about this dragon-kin. He sat on a stump fidgeting with his old worn boots. The soles were beginning to wear through.

His thoughts continued to wander during the description, “poisonous stinger”… that sounds nasty and we’re going to need somebody to engage it so it doesn’t fly away. Let’s see… Dmitri looked around at his companions, sizing them up as they discussed the topic. Ajari…no, he’ll be most effective with his bow. Septos… no, he will probably want to attack it from horseback. Essel… his role will likely involve his illusions or other magic but nothing up close. Ginny… well, he does have that frog and some handy magic but I don’t know that would he would want to go in close to fight. Hmm… shit. I’d better volunteer before it becomes a topic. This is probably gonna kill me.

Dmitri looked nervous. The blood had drained from his face. He stepped forward, “I’ll do it. I’ll engage the beast. I have some anti-toxin that can protect me from its poison.”

After some discussion, there were no significant objections to his suggestion. Some magical protection from Erastil’s grace would be a good idea. He’d need to pray for that spell.

The party headed out. The journey was uneventful but every hour that passed caused the knots in Dmitri’s stomach to tighten further. By the time they arrived it was difficult to keep food down. He was shaking and only his silent prayers helped him keep it together.

A few scattered sheep-parts demonstrated the power this beast had. Dmitri could tell by the enormous tracks in the dirt that this farmer was not exaggerating. If anything, it was probably bigger than a horse. A scorpion-like stinger on an animal the size of a horse… Vomit quickly rose to the back of his throat but he choked it back down as he pointed north, took a breath and steadied his voice, “The beast went that way.”

Tracking it down wasn’t the plan however. Septos wanted to make a stand here. It made sense.

Soon the time came. Ginnelthob swooped in to report a sighting. The group scrambled into position. Dmitri hunkered down into the illusionary flock of sheep. It looked like the beast was taking the bait. It swooped around several times before closing in. Dmitri’s adrenalin was pumping. Despite the cold he was sweating. He hoped it couldn’t smell the feces escaping into his trousers. With a roar, Dmitri charged and struck true into the beast’s chest. He hit it just about as hard as he could but it barely hurt the thing. It retaliated… heavily. The blows came one after the other, seemingly from all directions. wyvern.jpgThe stinger was the worst part but fortunately the anti-toxin seemed to work. The rest of his companions took action, an entangling spell to attempt to trap it, some solid blows from Ajari’s bow, magical missiles returning stings of their own, and finally Septos’s blow from charging on horseback with his lance. But it still didn’t go down. It had Dmitri in its talons and seemed about to escape so it dropped him. More arrows and the massive beast hit the ground. It was over. Dmitri crawled out from behind it and raised his thumb into the air… not sure if his companions were too worried but just in case he wanted them to know lived.

Essel - Session #1 Recap

These first few days have been difficult, without doubt.

Three others arrived at Oleg’s trading post on the last day of Calistril: a huntsman named Dmitri who carries an Aldori dueling sword, a wily tengu called Anjari, and a mounted soldier named Septos. We made our introductions with Oleg and his woman Svetlana, but conversation quickly turned to their recent problems with bandits; a small band of outlaws had recently taken to extorting Oleg and Svetlana under threat of violence, periodically taking their choice of provisions. We discussed the bandits briefly and decided that, technicalities aside, this issue did fall under the purview of Lord Surtova’s charter.

Svetlana offered to serve us a midday meal in the yard where we could discuss our plans further. It was during this meal that two more men arrived to enforce the charter: a robed elven priest called Revin and a strange gnome called Ginnelthob. As we continued to discuss the bandit issue and how we would resolve it, the first hints of potential disaster began to surface.

It was obvious that none of these men were prepared to execute this charter as necessary. The charter clearly stated that unrepentant banditry should be punished by sword or rope, but the phrase “unrepentant banditry” almost destroyed this venture before it began; while it clearly implicated those that have, until that point, engaged in banditry without attempt to repent or reform, the others have taken this to mean that any bandit found in the Stolen Lands should be given the chance to repent at swordpoint to avoid execution. This is obviously madness, but I maintained hope that a face-to-face encounter with these animals would set everyone on the right path.

We were awakened before dawn the next morning to take our positions, which for most meant staying out of sight. I was to veil myself as Svetlana to get close to the bandits and then surprise them with a Color Spray, but this had to change once the bandits arrived and Oleg ran inside the house… with Oleg inside, “Svetlana” had no reason to go near the bandits. In the guise of Oleg, I exited the house to find them already suspicious and preparing to attack, so I was forced to cast my spell over bandits and Ginnelthob alike. The battle ended with the final bandit surrendering to Dmitri, demoralized by seeing his leader slain and his companions unconscious.

It was at this point that potential disaster turned to reality. Beyond the typical promise of violence, these bandits had run Ginnelthob through while unconscious and tried in vain to kill Dmitri, so I set to cutting the throats of those still incapacitated knowing that the surrendered man would likely tell us all we needed to know. This was considered barbaric by everyone but myself and, I assume, Oleg; Revin even went so far as to tell me I had disgraced myelf, though I cannot overstate how little his concept of grace meant to me… as a matter of fact, I feel like I was doing his Goddess’s good work by sending those dogs to their ultimate reward. In any case, the others set to bickering over how exactly they could show the maximum amount of mercy to attempted murderers, regardless of whoever else this put in jeopardy.

They eventually settled on mutilating the bandits’ flesh with a hot iron and releasing them after they had told us all they knew. This turned out to be information on the bandit camp run by Kressle, as well as a larger camp run by The Stag Lord himself. After a nearly successful escape attempt by one of our prisoners which resulted in his death, we took the other three with us and headed out towards Kressle’s camp.

More to come…
